Although I served during the Vietnam war, I was serving in the Cold War with the USSR. I was home ported at NAS Quonset Point, RI, with Air Antisubmarine Squadron Twenty-Four (VS-24). We were a part of Carrier Air Group 56 deploying aboard the USS Intrepid (CVS-11). Our role was supporting Hunter-Killer Forces, Atlantic Fleet (HUKFORLANT) in protecting the U.S. and maritime activities from submarines (both attack submarines and ballistic-missile submarines) operating in the North Atlantic Ocean and in the Norwegian, Mediterranean, and Barents Seas.
A major upside of this duty – having port calls around coastal Europe, including ports in Norway, Denmark, Scotland, England, Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, and Greece.
Some people suffer from sleepless nights. I once experienced 3 weeks of nightless sleeps as we operated far above the Arctic Circle north of Norway during August. Oh, my! Just about to celebrate the 48th anniversary of this event.
